An Inspirational Diversity and Leadership Conference

By: Kevin L. Nichols

(BERKELEY, Calif.)  February 2-3, 2012.  The California Diversity Council held its 3rd Annual Diversity and Leadership Conference at the University of California, Berkeley.  The event was sponsored by Jack in the Box, VISA, and U.C. Berkeley.  The mistresses of ceremony were Stephanie Cruz (Fox 40 News Anchor in Sacramento) and Darla Givens (News 10 Anchor also in Sacramento).

The first day of the conference began with a welcome by National Diversity CEO and Fonder of the California Diversity Council, Dennis Kennedy, followed by words by U.C. Berkeley Chancellor Robert J. Birgeneau.  Then 22 of California’s Most Powerful and Influential Women were honored and awarded (see http://bit.ly/AyRP5l for the list of awardees).  The remainder of the day involved thought provoking and empowering workshops on various topics such creating success, strategic leadership, and managing your career.  Donna Brazile gave a rousing keynote address.

Day two was very similar, with awards being administered to California’s Multicultural Leaders, workshops regarding diversity best practices, GLBT roundtable, and politics.  Dr. Cornel West presented a captivating keynote address which concluded the conference.

This was one of the most amazing compilations of thought leaders and exchange of ideas that I have ever experienced.  I was moved and humbled by the spectrum of information that was displayed and the sincerity of all that shared their ideas.  I cannot wait until next year’s conference, which I am sure will be bigger and better.
